What Counts as a Message

Your plan includes a number of agent messages each month. This page explains what counts toward it, so there are no surprises.

What counts

One message is one thing a person sends to one of your agents. It counts the same way wherever it comes from:

  • the chat widget on your website,
  • the REST API,
  • WhatsApp or Instagram,
  • voice conversations,
  • the Playground in the console, when you test an agent.
tip

Test messages in the Playground count toward your allowance, just like real ones. The console shows how many you have left right under the message box.

What does not count

  • Approving or declining an action an agent asked you to confirm. That continues a message you already sent.
  • A message that fails to produce an answer. If something goes wrong on our side or the model's, for example the model is unavailable, the message is given back. You are never charged for a message that did not get an answer.
  • Anything you do in the console that is not a conversation with an agent, such as editing an agent or browsing sessions.

Starter messages are separate

On the Free plan, your first 50 messages run on our model and are free. They are a one-time allowance, not a monthly one, and they also count toward your 100 monthly messages. After they are used up, you connect your own model key. See Connect your own model key.

When the allowance runs out

Your agents pause until it resets on the 1st of the month (UTC), or until you upgrade. You get a notification at 80% and at 100%, so you can act before that happens. See Plans and limits.
